Differentiation with Technology

  Reflection             This lesson plan has been created for a small group of first graders that I see every day that focuses on alphabet sequencing, word formation, and letter sounds.   This group was created by the first grade teachers due to a beginning of the year assessment that showed pre-dyslexia qualities, but these students cannot be tested for dyslexia until they are second graders.   This remediation helps this group of students fill in gaps, revisit prior letter-sound relationships, and build confidence in these skills in a repetitive learning style so that growth is acquired and built on.   The technology that is included is based on skills that have been practiced before and on applications that has been used before. Designing a Differentiated Lesson Plan

       This one day lesson plan is based on the preflight class that I have every day for 45 minutes.  I have 5 first grade students in this group that are in need of remediation on alphabet skills, letter sounds, initial and ending sounds, and developing rhyming words based on simple rules of phonic skills.  These five students are from three different first grade classrooms, and I have been assigned to teach this remediation program to them. Differentiation Planning for this group takes some time to prepare lessons and look at data consistently to know the direction that lessons need to go.  My mentor teacher, Kristin Vernon, almost always states, “Repetition is key for these students.  They must practice the same strategies over and over again.  The more repetition we give them, the more it will be retained.” These students love coming in every day, building their alphabet, and reporting their letters to me in sequence.  It is a fact ...

Learning Styles Analysis

     I am studying the learning styles of five first grade students that are not performing to standard on reading tests and have been prescreened for dyslexia.   These students are practicing putting their alphabet letters in ABC order, recognize letter sounds, and make words.   Once students make words, we come up with new words that rhyme and look for those patterns.   These students have come a long way since I have started working with them.   Their learning styles are collected in the pie chart below.   Interconnection of Learning Styles and Development             There are two students that have shown to be visual learners.   They are the students that “… like to see and observe the things that they are learning about,” (GCU, 2020).   Assessing Technology-Based Resources for Differentiation             Technology in the classroom has become more than just a center in the past several years.   It has become an essential part of the classroom and prepares students to use technology in the outside world.   Using different platforms, apps, devices, etc. can enrich the curriculum by differentiating instruction and allowing student engagement to increase while interacting with each other as a class, working in groups, or doing independent work.   Concordia University (2021) states, “ In addition to resources like textbooks and worksheets, technology equips educators with various tools to help students develop a better understanding of the material”.   There are so many types of technology to choose from, and I have highlighted four of some of my favorites that have helped me in the classroom.
